When it comes to renting a storage unit, you want to make sure you are getting the absolute most value out of your space. It isn't just about how much stuff you can cram inside—it is about packing strategically so your belongings stay perfectly safe and easy to reach when you need them.
Before you start loading up the truck, use these five clever spacing hacks to maximize every single square inch of your unit:
1. Think Vertically (Go High!)
Most people only think about the floor space of their storage unit, but you are paying for the height too! Place your heaviest, most durable items—like sturdy plastic bins, washing machines, or solid wood furniture—on the bottom. Then, stack lighter boxes and fragile items safely on top toward the ceiling.
2. Disassemble Furniture
Large furniture items are giant space hogs. Take the legs off kitchen tables, disassemble bed frames, and remove headboards. Don't forget to tape the screws and brackets securely to the furniture piece in a clear bag so you don't lose them!
3. Use Furniture as Extra Storage
Don't leave empty space inside the unit if you don't have to. If you are storing a dresser, wardrobe, bookshelf, or refrigerator, fill the insides! Drawers, appliances, and shelves are perfect hiding spots for clothes, linens, books, and small, non-breakable boxes.
4. Create a Center Aisle
There is nothing worse than needing one item from the back of your unit and having to unpack the entire space to get to it. Leave a clear walkway straight down the middle of your unit. Turn box labels outward toward the aisle so you can scan and find what you need in seconds.
5. Store Couches and Mattresses Upright
Sofas take up massive horizontal footprints on the floor. If possible, stand your couch up vertically on its end (use an old blanket or cardboard beneath it to protect the fabric). Mattresses should also be stored upright along the side walls of your unit to keep your floor space open for stackable boxes.
By taking just a few extra minutes to plan your layout, you can fit more than you think into a smaller unit size—saving you cash and keeping your life organized!
